There are good jobs to be had all over Alabama, and many residents commute to work by car. Here are just two examples: Birmingham is the economic center of the state, whose key industries include banking, healthcare, and manufacturing. Commuter routes include Interstates 20, 59, and 65. Huntsville is a hub for aerospace and high-tech, whose major employers include NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center, Redstone Arsenal, and Boeing. Commuter routes include I-565 and U.S. Highway 72. But wherever you end up working, if you must or want to commute by car, you’ll need a driver’s license.
To obtain a driver’s license in Alabama, you must pass three official tests: a vision exam, a written knowledge test, and a road skills test. (You must also meet some other requirements.) If you’re under 18, you must first earn an instruction permit unless you are married or the head of a household. The permit will allow you to practice driving while supervised. The vision and knowledge tests are key requirements for a permit too. If you’re 18 or older, an instruction permit is optional if you need more supervised driving practice.
The Alabama DMV written test covers Alabama traffic laws, road signs, and rules of safe driving. The passing score is 80%. Unfortunately, in 2020 – 2023, about 49.1% of applicants – nearly half – failed the written knowledge test on their first attempt. Apparently, just reading the official driver’s manual (Alabama DMV Handbook (AL Driver's Manual) 2025) before the knowledge test wasn’t sufficient.
We want to make sure that you pass on your first try. We offer a series of practice tests based on the official manual. Each practice test is up to date as of February 2025 and comes with our AI Assistant, which can give you hints and explanations to speed up your learning process.
This is the second of our six Alabama Permit Practice Tests. Like all our permit practice tests, we created it to help aspiring drivers like you pass the Alabama written knowledge test. All these practice tests are multiple choice. Each question comes with several answer options. You must choose the best or most complete answer. Like the official written test, these practice tests are based on the official driver’s manual, and their passing score is 80%.
Please also read our Alabama DMV Permit Test Study Guide. It lists things you should do as your exam day approaches. It covers what documents to take to the written test, what fees you may have to pay, frequently missed test questions, and other last-minute test tips.
